From Olympic Gold to Joy on the Ice

February 1994…

I watched the Olympic Games unfold with bated breath.

Not only was I watching my favorite skater of all time win Olympic gold, but I was also holding a dream of one day coaching an Olympic Champion myself.

At the time, I was three years into pursuing my degree in coaching figure skating, and absolutely convinced this was part of my destiny. The story of how I became a skating coach is one for lovers of the mystical.

Then, in 2006, I thought my dream had almost come true.

I coached another Olympic favorite — Sasha Cohen — a hair away from Olympic gold. At the time, I saw only the heartbreak of falling short of the top of the podium.

But I could not yet see into the future.

What I once experienced as a loss became the beginning of a much deeper quest:
to understand why some people lose access to themselves under pressure while others remain connected to something greater within.

Why can an athlete perform brilliantly in practice… and then suddenly become a different person the moment it matters most?

That question stayed with me for years.

And eventually, that quest gave birth to i’MAGiNT LiFE:
a daily practice of embodiment through intention, identity, and even a bottle of water.

What began as a search for answers in sport slowly evolved into something much greater:
a way to help human beings consciously embody the qualities they wish to live, create, and express.

Yesterday, life quietly completed a circle I never could have imagined.

On Mother’s Day…
which also happened to be Oksana Baiul’s mother’s birthday…

I found myself coaching and supporting Oksana Baiul at a skating competition at America First Center on Water Street in Henderson, Nevada.

More than 30 years after she first inspired the dream in me…
there I was, helping put her on the ice.

The quality she chose for herself that day was Joy.

That was the quality she was giving birth to on the ice…
and everyone in attendance was there to witness it.

After 20 years away from competition, she skated again.

And afterward, she shared these words publicly:

“After 20 years the beautiful Oksana Joy takes the ice again!”

Not Oksana the Olympic Champion.
Not Oksana the legend.

Oksana Joy.

That touched me deeply.

Because this is the heart of what I have come to believe after decades in sport and life:

The greatest performances do not happen when people try to prove themselves.

They happen when people become connected enough to fully express who they truly are.

And perhaps the most beautiful part of this entire experience was something almost symbolic beyond words.

Afterward, we stood together holding i’MAGiNT LiFE | SPORT bottles at the top of a staircase, with another staircase continuing upward behind us.

One level completed.
Another waiting to unfold.

Years ago, I dreamed of coaching an Olympic Champion.

Life fulfilled that dream in a way far more meaningful than I originally imagined.

Not only through medals…
but through artistry, resilience, spirit, return…
and the quiet beauty of witnessing another human being continue to shine.

Universe has fascinating ways of answering our deepest desires:
not always exactly as we imagined…
but often more completely than we knew to ask for.
